Obituary of Adarsh Singh Mahal

Dr. Adarsh Singh Mahal, 98, of Bedminster, died peacefully on May 18, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 16, 1919 in the District Sargodha, Punjab, India to his dear parents, Mata Dhan Kaur and Sardar Dasondha Singh.

Dr. Mahal entered Medical College in Amritsar in 1937, and went on to serve in the Indian Army during WWII.  He became an Ophthalmologist in 1953, but later decided his true interest was Psychiatry and obtained his MD in Psychiatry from AIIMS.  In 1970, he became a Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences in Bangalore.

After retiring from Government Service, he had a private practice in New Delhi till 1994, when he and his wife moved to the US to live closer to his children and grandchildren.  He was a passionate doctor, a teacher and volunteer advocate for patients at the Lyons VA Hospital.  He loved to play chess, read and was a n avid walker all his life.

On April 8, he had a stroke, and despite aggressive treatment and rehab at Kessler, his ability to walk and speak on his own did not return.  Dr. Mahal was a genuine, honest and passionate man who conducted himself in a selfless way and adjusted with great stoicism to the changes that his long years brought.  He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Dr. Mahal is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Nasib; 3 loving sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Ammol (Dr. Surjit) Mahal of California, Dr. Pradeep (Mary) Mahal and Dr. Sharan (Dr. Mona) Mahal of Warren, NJ; a brother Kishan (Nirmal) Mahal of California; 8 wonderful grandchildren, Subena (Barrett), Yasmin (Johann), Vikram, Kiran, Tarika, Monica, Katelin (Danielle) and Arjun; 6 cherished great grandchildren, Maya, Spencer, Hanna, Pemma, Harper and Bodhi, former daughter-in-law, Jasbir and a large extended family.  He was predeceased by his parents and 3 brothers.

Funeral Service: Friday, May 25, 2018, 7:00 to 8:00pm at Branchburg Funeral Home, 910 US Highway 202 South, Branchburg, NJ 08876 (908) 526-7638, and  Saturday, May 26, 2018 from 9:00 to 11:00am at Franklin Memorial Park, Route 27 & Cozzens Lane, No. Brunswick, NJ 08902. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Dr. Mahal’s memory be made to The Jed Foundation, which works to protect emotional health & suicide prevention in teens and young adults (www.jedfoundation.org)
