Fuming Fong of East Windsor, New Jersey, an accomplished engineer passed away on July 27, 2026 at Princeton Medical Center in New Jersey with family at his side. Fuming was born in Hangzhou, China on February 14, 1935 to father Shan Fong and mother Ji Lu and grew up in Shanghai, China.

At age nine, he lost his father who fought for the founding the Chinese Republic and died in the war against Japan. He was then raised alone by his mother, a single parent and fiercely independent and strong woman in war-torn China.

Fuming received his education in Shanghai. He attended Shanghai High School and Weiyu High School before studying at the prestigious Shanghai Jiao Tong University where he met his future wife, a fellow electrical engineering student, Sylvia Chang. They were married in 1957 after they graduated in Shanghai.

Assigned by the government to the hinterlands of northwestern China for the construction of one of the largest electrical power plants of the communist China era, they weathered freezing winters, endured near starvation conditions and lived in mud huts with earthen floors for the first three years of their marriage.

They resettled back in Hangzhou in the early 1960s. Through the tumultuous Mao era of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s they supported each other and relied on each other’s strength and survived political persecutions and family tragedies. In times of personal and family trials and tribulations he was the bedrock of quiet strength for the family.

He devoted his career to the power industry as an electrical engineer, rising to serve as Deputy Director and Chief Engineer of the Zhejiang Provincial Electric Power Bureau, and as Vice Chairman of the Zhejiang Electric Power Society. Among the proudest achievements of his career, he led the procurement and construction of the Beilun Power Plant in Ningbo, then the first World Bank funded, the largest power generation facility in mainland China, and still is now. He spearheaded the Shaoxing High-Voltage Testing Field. His work on a simplified wiring scheme for series capacitor compensation, improved high-voltage, long-distance electrical power transmission, earned him a National Science Conference Award in 1978. He immigrated to the United States in the 1990s, and in his later years he embraced the Christian faith and was baptized.

A lifelong electronics enthusiast, he embraced digital technology with the same zeal, and it became his favorite pastime in later years.

Fuming loved working with young people and he mentored and guided the careers of many young engineers and managers who worked for him. He earned their respect and they formed lifelong friendships.

A caring neighbor, he was generous with his time and energy and was there to help when someone had a computer problem or needed a ride to a doctor’s office. An active member of the Dragon Club of his community, he helped at club events and participated in club activities whenever he could.

Fuming is survived by his wife of 69 years, Sylvia, his sons Dayan, Hailey (Michael Mattingly), his grandson Weston and granddaughter Louisa.

Visitation will be held on Friday August 7, 2026 at Bongiovi Funeral Home 416 Bell Avenue Raritan, NJ from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
