SISTER JOSEPHINE CALO, MPF Sister Josephine Calo, MPF, 84, died as she lived, peacefully, Friday, March 10, 2017, St. Joseph Hall, Villa Walsh, Morristown, NJ. The viewing will be held Monday, March 13, 2017, from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm in the Saint Lucy Chapel at Villa Walsh, Morristown, NJ, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 4:00 pm celebrated by Rev. Jeffrey Lee, Pastor of St. Mary's Parish, Colts Neck, NJ. Interment will follow the liturgy at the Ave Maria Cemetery, Morristown,NJ. Born and raised in Waterbury, CT, Sister Josephine entered the Religious Teachers Filippini in February, 1953 and was invested in August of the same year. Her final religious profession was in 1956. Sister Josephine was awarded a BS degree with a major in elementary education from St. Joseph University, Philadelphia, PA. Later she was certified as a hospital chaplain. Sister Josephine taught at the elementary level at the following schools: St. Peter, Merchantville, NJ; St. Ann, Raritan, NJ; St. Rocco, Newark, NJ; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Newark, NJ; Holy Family, Nutley, NJ; Most Holy Rosary, Perth Amboy, NJ; Our Lady of Mt. Virgin, Garfield, NJ; Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Ellwood City, PA; St. Anthony, Waterbury, CT. In addition to teaching, Sister Josephine held other roles: principal and superior, St. Joseph, Lodi, NJ; superior at Holy Family, Nutley, NJ; St. Joseph by the Sea, South Mantoloking, NJ; Villa Victoria, Trenton, NJ; hospital chaplain at Saint Joseph, Toms River, NJ; pastoral minister at St. Cecelia Parish, Iselin, NJ, Our Lady of the Angels (St. Joachim) Trenton, NJ, and St. Joseph Hall, Villa Walsh. In 2012, Sister Josephine became a resident at St. Joseph Hall Infirmary. In every place of mission and in every role, Sister Josephine was loved by both children and adults; she was gentle, kind, compassionate. Her greatest strength was ministering to the sick because of these distinct qualities. Sister Josephine was predeceased by her parents John and Theresa (Lo Giudice) Calo, brothers Anthony and Angelo Giardino; sisters Mary (Giardino) Lumia, Rose Calo, Grace (Calo) Verno, of Waterbury, CT, and Florence (Calo) Rousseau of San Bernadino, CA. She is survived by loving nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sister Josephine Calo may be sent to St. Joseph Hall, c/o Sister Ascenza Tizzano, MPF, Provincial Superior, Villa Walsh, 455 Western Avenue, Morristown, NJ 07960.
